Ravenshoe Steam Train

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

‘Capella’ the Ravenshoe Steam Train runs most Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30pm. This historic train takes you on a short journey from the township of Ravenshoe in Cairns Highlands region to the rural community of Tumoulin where the train stops for afternoon tea then turns around and goes back!

Along the way you’ll see spectacular scenery and pass by farmland, a waterfall, and beautiful bushland where if you’re lucky enough you might spot some kangaroos, birds and other wildlife. You can take your own snacks or enjoy the tea and scones available for purchase once the train pulls into Tumoulin.

We love the steam train its perfect for young children as its a short journey, you leave at 1:30 and are back to Ravenshoe by 3pm. The landscape here is different to the coastal rainforest and also the drier outback region so its a unique way to see this area, we always see lots of birds. On your way to Tumoulin you pass by farms with horses and quaint homesteads too and its quite an interesting journey. Of course the steam train itself is unique too, its purely run by steam power and its old carriages are all in great condition, the people who run this tour are also an important reason we love visiting they’re all volunteers and are passionate about keeping the steam train going, they’re great to talk to and can tell you stories about steam trains from all around the world.

Adults are $18.00 children $9.00 or a family ticket is $38.00
